Lecturer: Dr. Hector Garcia - psychologist, researcher, and Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and Texas A&M San Antonio. Author of Alpha God and Sex, Power and Partisanship. Dr. Garcia's work focuses on the evolutionary psychology of religion, warfare, politics, and PTSD. He has been featured on TED, PBS, and CSPAN.
Event Description:
Politics can elicit powerful, irrational, and sometimes volatile emotions. It is precisely these passions that political science falls regrettably short of explaining. Through the lens of evolutionary science, Garcia offers a novel perspective on why we hold our political ideas, and why they are so often in conflict. The author reveals how even the most complex political processes can be traced back to our basic drives to survive and reproduce—including the policies we back, whether we are liberal or conservative, and whether we are inspired or repelled by the words of a president.
