Jewish life has existed in Kraków almost since the city's foundation. It was then confined to nearby Kazimierz for several hundred years, which became the center of the Jewish community's social, religious, and economic life. From the mid-19th century, as full citizens of Kraków, Jews could settle in any part of the developing city, to which Kazimierz belonged now as a district. Many believe that World War II destroyed Jewish life in our city, that it never recovered - but this is not true, as you will discover during a walk through places important to Jewish citizens of Kraków, both centuries ago and today, as described in the guide "MAPA: Contemporary Jewish Places and Stories."
